By Inexhaustible Reader I am very glad I got this as there have been many flues around this year. Why I wrote a review: Mine will not read poperly unless I wipe it every single time I use it. This advice is written right on the thing but I thought (for my own crazy reasons) it was being facetious. It works perfectly when you wipe it with a dry cotton swab every single time you use it. I think this is probably the main reason its receiving poor reviews. Hope this review helps so that when one needs it to work it will.

Cool gadget, if nothing elseMar 13, 2008
By Alastair J. Gregory I bought this primarily as an ear thermometer for my kids, but it also allegedly is able to sense the temperature of other things just by being pointed at them. This appeals to my inner geek.
It is really well priced and seems to work well though I have yet to use it to actually check for a fever. My only complaint is that the blue 'scan' button at the top of the unit is not a sealed control. It would be nice if it were seamless so that it doesn't give the impression of potentially trapping dirt or admitting moisture. But all-in-all, I'm very pleased with the purchase.

Digital ThermometerMay 04, 2009
By C. Prince I just switched to this thermometer after three years my original one wore out. I love it!! It took a few minutes to set up the date and time but after that it is just press and go to get my son's temp. Thank you for making it so easy!

Choose another thermometerNov 29, 2008

"New Mom"
We bought this thermometer from Walmart for our 6 month old and have had nothing but problems. The "low battery" sign has been on regardless of changing out to a new battery, not once but twice. Then it continues to show the temperature of not only our son, but also of ourselves to be around 94 degrees or too "Lo" to scan. We are finally breaking down and attempting to return to Walmart and will buy a different thermometer, hopefully with better results.

works about as expected.Sep 24, 2011
By Paulmeister I bought this half for its utility as a body temp reader and half for it being a cool gadget. It would be nice to have a way of calibrating it, so without such, it's indeed very likely to be off by a few degrees, making it more useful as a "relative" thermometer, as another reviewer noted. This means that to get the most from it as a body reader, you should take some base line measurements when you are well, at various times of the day, and then record those numbers for later reference. When you think you might have a fever, simply take a few readings and compare with the base line to get the relative difference, which will tell you a lot more than relying on absolute numbers which, as stated, are probably off slightly.
The device is very sensitive to the distance / relative size of heat sources, so even slight changes in distance (half an inch) can affect the reading by a number of degrees. It is definitely infra-red, as it cannot see a burning candle immediately on the other side of a glass window, though the temperature does ramp up slightly as the glass absorbs some of the heat.
As for accuracy, it seems to fluctuate about 2-4 degrees lower than body temperature normal when reading the inner ear. This could be for several reasons; either the calibration may be off, the radiant heat of my ear is below average, the device is not being aimed properly (user error), or the sensor needs to be cleaned.
For example, the readings I get can be as low as 94.4, or as high as 96.4, with an average reading of about 95.6. Those are actual values taken from multiple readings of both ears within seconds of each other. The ambient mode reflects essentially the same temperature range, making the only real difference between the two modes is that with the ear mode you get the 'temperature lock' and 'ready' beep-tones, the visual light indicators of green or red, and a much more narrow temperature range, outside of which you receive a "Hi" or "Lo" visual warning.
I noted that some have issues with the device not turning itself off, or the battery meter reading low-battery even after replacement. I haven't noticed those issues and my unit turns off promptly after 1 minute, with or without the plastic end cap and the battery meter reads full (as it should).
It sure came in handy a couple years ago when my parents replaced all of the old windows in their house with the newer "high efficiency" kind and we were able to record the before and after temperatures on the glass and note the relative difference it made (several degrees, as I recall).
For the price, I think this little guy works pretty well and can be quite useful.
Cheers!
